History of the NYC Pennsylvania Division

In 1854, John Magee purchased a controlling interest in the Corning and Blossburg Railroad and thereafter through a series of acquisitions led to the formation of the Fall Brook Railway in 1892. The line was created essentially to carry coal from the mines of Pennsylvania to the canal and lakes system in New York State, ultimately accessing the Erie Canal and New York Central and Hudson Railroad mainline that cross cut New York State.

On May 1, 1899, the Fall Brook Railway is leased to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad for 999 years and becomes known as the New York Central RR Pennsylvania Division

Officially in 1914 with the amalgamation of several predecessor lines the route from Williamsport, PA to Lyons, NY, a distance of 257miles, became the "Fall Brook Division" of the New York Central System, and again shortly thereafter the division returned to being published as the Central's Pennsylvania Division. However, even to the present day the existing trackage is affectionately referred to as the Fall Brook.
